It has pied plumage with blackish brown upperparts, heavily spotted and barred white. The crown is yellow and like most species of woodpeckers the male wears a red crest.
Woodpeckers are well equipped to access insects no matter where they are hiding in a tree and like most omnivores they will be happy to make a meal of pulpy fruit like ficus and nectar of flowers.
