Serinus is a genus of small birds in the finch family Fringillidae found in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. The birds usually have some yellow in their plumage. The genus was introduced in 1816 by the German naturalist Carl Ludwig Koch. The genus name (Serinus) is New Latin for "canary-yellow".
Serins are small finches with short stubby bills and forked tails. Both sexes have streaky yellow brown upper parts and lemon yellow rumps. The Fire-fronted serin (red-fronted serin) gets its name from its flaming red head cover. It is a bird of higher altitudes and is found in the Himalayas in Ladakh.
