Butterfly pea flower tea is a blue coloured tea full of potent antioxidants made by adding hot water to the flowers. Adding a little lemon juice changes the colour from bluish to pink. It is like a natural litmus and this colour change is due to a change in the pH. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of butterfly pea flower extract can also help alleviate pain and reduce fevers and help protect the skin against premature aging. It is used in Southeast Asia cuisine as a natural colouring agent.
The genus "Clitoria" was named after the human clitoris, for the flowers bear a resemblance to the human female genitals. In traditional Chinese medicine, the plant has been ascribed properties affecting female libido due to its similar appearance to the female reproductive organ.
