Magpies and treepies are believed to have evolved from a Jay-like ancestor and the 'pie' in their name refers to the black and white or pied plumage of many of them.
Treepies are highly arboreal and rarely come to the ground to feed, therefore referred to as "treepie".
The grey treepie or the himalayan treepie is a familiar sight in the Himalayan forests across India.
