"Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean."- John Muir
The Himalayan woodpecker like many other bird species in the Himalayas are altitudinal migrants. They nest in self made cavities in trees and the populations in higher altitudes descend to lower levels during winter.
The early morning climb towards the Tungnath temple had been a mix of moments of breathlessness due to the extra weight of layers of clothing, camera and moments that took your breath away as you looked at the snow clad Himalayan peaks against a blue sky in absolute awe and reverence.
