"I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way." - Carl Sandburg
Redwings were the first bird species which proved that birds could detect fruit using ultraviolet vision making us realise that birds can see parts of the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum that are invisible to human eyes.
Commonly thought to symbolise the advent of Autumn, Redwings are migratory winter birds. Native to Eurasia, they mostly return to the UK in October and November in large flocks, leaving again in March and April. Unlike many migratory birds that are faithful to specific wintering grounds, redwings are nomadic, following the good weather and food supplies wherever it takes them.
Redwings are classified in the UK as a Red List species in the Birds of Conservation Concern review, owing to the small population of breeding pairs that remain in the UK. The species is believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline and is classified Near threatened in the IUCN Red List.
