The cinereous tit is a sparrow sized passerine bird. Usually seen in pairs with their grey back, black hood, white cheeks and distinct pattern they are a fairly unmistakable sight in the gardens around our city.
The bird gets its name from its ash grey colouration. The word "cinereous" comes from the Latin word "ciner" meaning "ashes". The name "tit" is thought to be derived from the Norse word "tita", meaning "small bird or animal".
