Although one of the most abundant of the Asian storks, this species is classified as Near Threatened because of habitat loss and pollution.
The adults have a long yellow orange bill, pink legs,white plumage with black markings and a splash of rose pink near the tail feathers. This colourful display lends it its name "Painted stork".
