The Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse finds itself at home in the dry scrub forests interspersed with grasslands on the eastern outskirts of Pune. When it detects a predator it prefers to sit still and rely on its wonderfully camouflaged plumage to conceal itself rather than flee and give away its location. Grasslands are an important eco system and as long as we perceive them to be wastelands and try to irrigate them into sugarcane fields or factories we shall be driving such endemic plant and animal life to their doom.
